Under construction in Holborn, London, a significant new build extension and refurbishment project is taking place at the Grade II listed Royal College of Surgeons building. Originally constructed between 1806 and 1813, the college’s extension will face the historic Lincoln’s Inn Fields, one of London’s most important open spaces.
This ambitious project aims to enhance the Royal College of Surgeons’ facilities by incorporating modern amenities, including flexible teaching spaces, examination rooms, function rooms, a café, and a spacious glazed central atrium. The design promotes the exchange of knowledge through shared, flexible, and social working environments.
A notable aspect of the project involves the redesign and relocation of the esteemed Hunterian Museum. The new building will be optimized for modern standards, offering greater flexibility and efficiency, ensuring it meets the current and future needs of the college while maintaining economical running costs.
Clarkebond’s involvement in the project includes providing façade engineering services for the new-build façade. These facades will feature purpose-made slender reinforced concrete panels adorned with intricate architectural detailing, specifically designed to complement the unique character of the area and harmonize the historic architectural setting with the contemporary design.
Anticipated to be completed next year, this transformative project will rejuvenate the Royal College of Surgeons, preserving its historical significance while embracing innovation and modernity to serve future generations of professionals and learners in the medical field.
