Another accolade for project to celebrate the life of a great engineer

The annual Michelmores Property Awards have again celebrated outstanding property and construction projects in Devon, Somerset, Bristol, Dorset and Cornwall, with Bristol’s Being Brunel visitor attraction taking home the 2019 prize for Leisure & Tourism Project of the Year.

The project saw the restoration and extension of the partly derelict 20th century dockside buildings which run alongside the SS Great Britain, a Grade II listed building and Brunel’s drawing office.

The buildings have been transformed into a new visitor experience, based on the life and legacy of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Clarkebond provided structural engineering services on this challenging project and were praised by the client for their significant contribution to the project. “We were particularly pleased with the work of Clarkebond who redesigned the foundations and steel frame (originally designed by others) enabling us to bring the scheme within budget and making it much easier to build.  Nothing was too much trouble and there was a genuine desire from everyone to ensure that we met all our objectives and that we opened on time,” Mike Day, Senior Project Manager, SS Great Britain Trust.

James Edmonds, Associate Director of Clarkebond, joined the winning team at the awards event to celebrate the latest win for this project.
