Placement student celebrates “fast paced” year within the industryCalum joined Clarkebond in April 2022 as part of his placement year after finishing his BEng in Civil Engineering at Leeds university. He will return to Leeds to complete his MEng later this year.
Now that his placement year is nearing its end, we have asked him a few questions about his experience with Clarkebond.
We are incredibly happy with the amount of progress Calum has made over the year and we wish him the absolute best with his final year of study.
I’ve enjoyed contributing to projects as a valued member of the Clarkebond team. There have been many opportunities for increasing knowledge related to legislation, general business works and software use. The team on both the civils and structures side have been warm and welcoming and the regular activities outside of work have been good fun.
Clarkebond had a host of interesting projects previously completed and underway. The staff were friendly during the interview process and the day-to-day working seemed in depth and invaluable for engineers getting into a civil based career.
As a busy multi-disciplinary firm, work for projects had to be turned around quite quickly, so the general pace of the office was quite surprising at first. Working on multiple jobs within different types of projects helped me learn things quickly and in turn improve my skills.
I had previous work experience but never in an office, which I feel like I’ve adapted to well. It can be very busy in the office, but I’ve learnt to juggle multiple projects at once and learnt to prioritise how I spend my time at work.
I’ve learnt the internal general processes involved in producing drawings for projects at different stages of production and I’ve also learnt the external processes in corresponding with the various organizations that provide different services for Clarkebond and/or the client.
