Weston College Health and Active Living Centre

A multi-million flagship facility at Weston College’s Loxton Campus, Weston-Super-Mare, has been officially opened. The first of its kind in the region, the Health and Active Living Skills Centre enables young people and members of the public to gain access to modern facilities with the aim to improve the general health and wellbeing of the community.

Clarkebond provided a range of engineering services on the project, including civils, structures, ground engineering and flood risk assessment.

Clarkebond engineers designed piled foundations with a suspended floor slab for the centre because the local ground conditions of soft alluvial clays with high shrinkage potential and made ground were unsuitable for conventional shallow foundations.

The centre provides a modern learning environment for students studying courses in sport and health and social care. The West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) through the Local Growth Fund, administered by the West of England Combined Authority contributed £5.4 million towards the project.
