Principal Structural Engineer
£ dependent on knowledge and experience Exeter Permanent
Summary of role:
This role would suit an engineer who has several years of experience working within the structural engineering industry and enjoys the variety of both private and public sector projects. You will have a hands-on approach and use your understanding of Eurocodes and current industry standards to deliver technically sound, sustainable and buildable solutions.
As a key member of the team, you will assist the Director to manage resources of the design group; assuming or delegating the role of Project Engineer and reviewing, checking and guiding more junior members of the team.
Job duties:
- Coordinate with Directors to allocate team resources, ensuring high standards of design and client service within time and budget limits.
- Define and agree on conceptual design principles, including client brief, cost, and program requirements, to guide each project.
- Oversee design processes, from initial assessments through final specifications, ensuring adherence to British Standards, Building Regulations, and internal quality checks.
- Manage daily project operations, including preliminary designs, scheme drawings, interdisciplinary collaboration, approvals, and site inspections.
- Attend client meetings to support project delivery and build client relationships.
- Conduct site visits to inspect work and document findings in line with the client’s brief.
- Assist Directors with budgeting and scheduling, including preparing fee proposals, projecting monthly income, and monitoring project costs.
- Track and document additional costs from design alterations, communicating these changes to Directors as needed.
- Support team development through effective delegation, project objective alignment, and performance management, while fostering employee well-being.
- Promote the company’s reputation and pursue personal development by staying updated on relevant standards, regulations, and industry knowledge.
- Perform other duties as requested to support the role of Principal Engineer.
Our ideal candidate will have:
- BEng in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Be a Chartered member of IStructE or equivalent (or significant senior level experience)
- Confident user of AutoCAD and Tekla
- A background in project delivery and a proven track record delivering within time and cost constraints
- Experience of new build and refurbishment across a range of sectors including residential, healthcare., education and industrial and of supporting projects of varying values and sizes.
- Experience in project management.
- Supervisory experience – checking and reviewing work of more junior staff and encouraging others.
- Experience of assisting with bids and tenders
- Experience working across disciplines (structures, hydrology, transport, geotechnical and external 3rd parties)
- A demonstratable commitment to their own continuous personal development
